What is a Personal Review of your FBI Criminal Background Check?
This type of FBI Request is one of the most common requests by individuals who seek to obtain a copy of their criminal history report (FBI good conduct letter). The Federal Law which allows individuals access to their records can be found in Departmental Order 556-73.
This Federal Law was enacted by the U.S Department of Justice in 2011, and it established rules and regulations allowing individuals to obtain a copy of their own Identity History Summary Record. The FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division processes these requests.
Specific information regarding this Departmental Order can be found below:

- To make sure your FBI record is complete, accurate and up-to-date.
- To review or to request a correction or update.
- To challenge information on your record.
- To satisfy certain legal requirements, such as a requirement for adopting a child, or immigration.
- To satisfy a requirement to live in a foreign country.
- To satisfy a requirement to work in a foreign country.
- To satisfy a requirement to travel in a foreign country.
- Other court related matters or personal reasons.
Who can obtain a copy of their FBI Criminal History Record?
US Citizens
Non-US Citizens who have permanent Resident Status
How was this done before Departmental Order 556-73?
Prior to July, 2011, in order for a person to get their own FBI background check, they would have to submit their fingerprints for their personal review to the FBI using the “old fashioned black ink on FBI card” method. In addition, applicants would have to submit a FBI applicant Form. These cards with form would then have to be sent to the FBI via postal mail. This process took between 6 and 12 weeks to get results.
How does the current FBI Channeler system work?
In 2011, the FBI began contracting specific companies to submit requests electronically in order to expedite the process for individuals who need results. These FBI selected businesses are known as Approved FBI Channelers. The channeler will submit the record request to the FBI electronically, and the applicant receives back a copy of their FBI Criminal History Record.
This exciting new service provides applicants with a copy of their FBI criminal history background report, or proof that one does not exist, WITHIN 24-48 HOURS of processing. There is no need to wait 6-8 weeks for the FBI response.
In addition we can capture an individual’s fingerprints using livescan fingerprint scanners (an inkless process) at both of our offices in New York and New Jersey. We also offer a very convenient Mobile Service where we can travel to your home or office to scan your fingerprints.
How does an applicant receive his/her results?
You will be given a computer-generated receipt upon completion of the fingerprinting process. You will also be given instructions via email on how to obtain the results of the FBI search online from our easy to use customer web portal on our company website. Your results will be available for viewing/printing within 30 hours of having completed the fingerprint capture process. A hard copy of the results can be obtained by printing directly from the web portal or selecting the mail option when initially submitting your request.
Results will only be mailed to the applicant. The only instance in which you can have results sent to someone else is to your attorney. In this case, your attorney would need to submit a request to us on their letterhead, with both your and your attorney’s signatures on the same document , along with the application, fingerprints, and payment
Can these FBI Criminal History Reports be apostilled?
Accurate Biometrics now provides FBI Criminal History Records that are now “acceptable” for Apostille purposes. If you require an apostille, you must send the authenticated document you received from New York Fingerprinting to the State Department for further action.
We can handle this process for you saving applicants a great deal of time and effort.
